University Honors and Scholars Program Information

The University Honors and Scholars Program is a vibrant academic community designed for students whose high school accomplishments indicate superior intellectual ability, motivation, and openness of mind. To encourage inquiry, creative thinking, and high scholarship, the University Honors and Scholars Program emphasizes breadth and depth of knowledge by nurturing intellectual independence.

While all students who attend Clark Atlanta University on a four-year scholarship are included in our scholar community, all students within the University may apply to pursue honors-level curriculum through our program. Class discussion, question and answer sessions, organized debates, student-initiated research projects and presentations by groups and individuals help Honors Program students become self-directed. Students are encouraged to develop their personalities and to pursue non-academic interests.

The goals of the University Honors and Scholars Program is to provide students with the ultimate learning experience while enrolled at Clark Atlanta University. Objectives of the program include the following:

  • to nurture and foster intellectual independence
  • to encourage the pursuit of academic excellence
  • to encourage institutional commitment and leadership development
  • to provide a challenging academic curriculum
  • to provide experiences that promote lifelong learning
  • to prepare students to be ready for career pathways that position them to be agents of change in broader communities

University Honors and Scholars Program Vision

“The University Honors and Scholars Program at Clark Atlanta University aspires to be a national model where students from all disciplines are challenged to develop talents and abilities to their maximum potential to thrive and contribute in a global society.”

University Honors and Scholars Program Requirements and Expectations

Students within the University Honors and Scholars Program are expected to consistently demonstrate high character and good judgement; provide regular service to the University, the program, and the community; and regularly participate in planned and mandatory program activities.

University Honors and Scholars Academic Opportunities

An honors curriculum is offered to students in the program; the curriculum supports general education requirements and encourages research inquiry. Students pursuing the honors curriculum must successfully complete at least six (6) honors-level courses and complete a senior thesis project in their major field or across two or three academic disciplines. Students must complete a minimum of eighteen (18) credit hours in honors-level courses to graduate with the highest recognition from the program.

Honors-level courses are offered to supplement the regular course offerings. They are more than accelerated; they are designed with the gifted student in mind. Typically, 15 to 20 students are enrolled in an honors-level course taught by a program-approved professor. Students participating in this program have special opportunities to participate in scholarly projects, studies abroad, internships, conferences, and special research.

Honors and Scholars Program Acceptance Requirements

Students who are recipients of four-year scholarships are automatically included in the University Honors and Scholars Program. Students who are not recipients of four-year scholarships may apply to join the program by completing and returning an application by May 1st for fall consideration and December 1st for spring. All students interested pursuing the honors academic course of study must meet the following criteria:
